The Pivot to a Fully Virtual Event

Organised as an in-person event, a lockdown caused The Women in the Public Service Summit Wellington to pivot to a fully virtual event in a mere 4 days.
After The Women in the Public Service Wellington had to postpone their 2020 event, the new event would allow the 500 registrants to participate in person.
At the same time, we also allowed for a back-up plan that enabled them to pivot to a fully virtual event in case the pandemic threw another tantrum.
Little did they know they would count their lucky stars they made that decision….
The Government Women’s Network (or GWN) first saw the light of day in 2015 when a group of professional women who didn’t know each other met. They realised that despite working for different agencies, they had a lot in common; doing the same thing, sharing the same concerns and promoting similar types of activities.
The decision was made to join forces. One year later, the network by women for women across government and around New Zealand was born.
Their mission is to
- enable women to reach their full potential.
- lift employee engagement, inspiration, motivation and professional connections.
- promote diversity and inclusivity across the public sector.
The Pivot to a Fully Virtual Event
Every year, The Women in Public Service Wellington has a sell-out one-day event hosted by Government Women’s Network. It’s so popular, it’s the size of the venue that determines the number of delegates that can attend.
Keynote speakers, a panel session, a networking function, 3 concurrent workshops and 2 concurrent sessions (with 3 streams per session) are all on the jam-packed ‘menu’.
After first postponing the June 2020 event to March 2021, they were confronted with the sudden Auckland level 3 lockdown. The rest of Aotearoa was at level 2, limiting the number of people gathering to 100.
Exactly 4 days was all it took to make the pivot to a fully virtual event with the MC and speakers on stage confidently looking at an empty room. It had just the cameraman and a couple of people behind the controls. Delegates sat safe and enthralled behind their screens at home.
It was a massive success!
‘What a fantastic day! The Women in Public Service Summit in Wellington yesterday brought some amazing speakers to around 500 attendees and we’ve heard rave reviews from participants and speakers alike despite the fact that we had to pivot to a fully virtual event at short notice.’
It was all thanks to the fact that Auaha had helped them prepare for the just-in-case.
